OVERVIEW

An informative infrographic that tackles Canada's gum litter problem

A brochure/poster that shows the cycle of gum litter from its production to how it ends up as litter. Each section of the cycle examines how gum affects the environment in many different ways such as the air, animals, water, etc.

A promotional booklet that rebrands the infamous 2012 Gayo Daejeon to a modern 2017 version. The theme of the show was “The Colors of Kpop” featuring performances by artists from different groups to showcase what makes Korean Pop unique.

THE CONCEPT

A colorful stick of gum

"Sticky Situation" aims to display a disgusting topic like gum litter into something that is informative but eye-catching. It can be read as a folded brochure or a large poster. The brochure size is very large therefore awkward to distribute, therefore I took advantage of the size and packaged it nicely into a stick of gum to relate it back to the topic

PROCESS

Background on the Issue

Gum litter is considered “invisible litter” in most countries as it is a problem that is often overlooked. This is what makes it such a dangerous form of plastic pollution. What most people don’t realize is that the accumulation of gum litter on the streets or under desks will affect the earth in the long term. It is important to understand how much damage gum can make in our ecosystem to prevent it from getting worse.

PROCESS

Reasearch on the Issue

I started this project thinking that I would be in trouble, because it was very hard  to find any research on gum litter in Canada. After searching for different resources, I found the film “Dark Side of the Chew” by Andrew Nisker, a Canadian filmmaker. Nisker's film examines Canada's gum litter problem which is how I started conceptualizing the project.

Upon receiving this project, I did not hesitate to continue exploring the Korean language. Since I have previously explored hand lettering in Hangul (Korean alphabet) I decided to go back and review some of what I learned from this exploration in hopes of maybe incorporating some hand-lettering into the brand.Although I never used the lettering for the final product, I still feel it was important to include it in the process

PROCESS

Planning and Organizing Content

Writing my ideas alongside sketching really helps me organize content better. After my research, I started to write it all down and divide it into sections. I discovered that the information from Nisker's film can be dsiplayed in a cycle of how gum litter starts from production and ends up as litter.

Right away, in order to create the booklet, I made some skectches to organize how things should be laid out. I rewatched the event to see which groups should be featured in the booklet based on their performances.
After figuring this out, I established the hierarchy I wanted to display the necessary information in to show the schedule of the festival.

PROCESS

Layouts

I began to sketch out some ideas of how I can visualize my content. I started working with a landscape layout to showcase the information but this looked too cramped and crowded. I soon started to play with folding the poster into the number of sectios I divided the content into, turning this into a brochure as well as a poster. The content can be read as a cycle or story whether it is folded or not.

PROCESS

Visual Design

I wanted to turn the disgusting topic of gum litter into something fun to look at and grab people's attention. I experimented with 3D shapes and then eventually started working with line art to make it to make some fun and cute illustrations. I also chose bright colors to compliment the illustrations.

Learning Outcomes

I learned a lot from this project, not just in the area of gum litter, but also in concept creation. Throughout the project, I struggled with the size of the poster and how I can make it easier to hold or showcase. The gum wrapper idea came very late in my process and it was then when I learned how important the concept is. Without revisiting the concept of gum litter, this idea would have never been realized.
